What a coincidence that not even a month after the release of Where the Wild Things Are, I stumble onto this Boston band which sings that "I’ve been dreaming about creatures/ coming from dunes on foggy beaches" (from their song ‘Creatures’). In fact, the Sendak comparison goes beyond lyrical content; musically, the three guys and a gal fromYou Can Be a Wesley arrange their songs in such an unflustered way (often with each instrument building succinctly upon one another as a track progresses) that I couldn’t help but be drawn to their particular brand of guitar-drum-bass-vocals pop.Especially because - and this is important - their lead vocalist, Saara Untracht-Oakner doesn’t sing like Regina Spektor. At all. And God/Yahweh/Allah/Vishnu bless her for it. I’m usually a bit picky when it comes to female vocalists, but Ms. Oakner’s got a certain something to her voice that really ties YCBaW’s music together (maybe it’s her ever-so-slight nasally singing...maybe I’ll never really know.) If your looking for some good starter tracks, I suggest ‘Creatures’ (the video posted above) and a track called ‘Feed the Moon Starve the Sun’ (which illustrates that idea of the instruments effortlessly building upon each other really well).
If you want to take in the fine troubadours from You Can Be a Wesley for your aural pleasure, come to Church tomorrow (Nov. 8, 8 PM) and see them play with Deer Tick.
